THE PROBLEM: 3 billion people in the world do not have access to clean water. Without clean water there is a low level of hygiene and people suffer from sicknesses such as Trachoma. Trachoma is caused by an infection of the bacteria Chlamydia trachoma.
The condition occurs around the world. It is most often seen in rural areas of developing countries. Children are often affected, but the scarring caused by the infection may not be noticed until later in life. The condition is rare in the United States. However, it is more likely to occur in crowded or unclean living conditions.
Trachoma is spread through direct contact with infected eye, nose, or throat fluids. It can also be passed by contact with contaminated objects, such as towels or clothes. Certain flies can also spread the bacteria.
THE INSIGHT: A lack of water decreases hygiene levels which lead to sickness.
THE CHALLENGE: How might we improve hygiene when water is scarce?
THE SOLUTION: Dry Bath is a unique body sanitizer that people can rub onto their skin to clean themselves without using any water. The sanitizer is as hygienic as a bath. This means that if people don’t have water they can still clean themselves. The sanitizer will increase hygiene levels in rural areas where there is not easy access to water.
THE IMPACT: This innovation addresses one of the major negative effects of a lack of water. People without access to water can now maintain hygiene and avoid disease. Not only that, but it is saving water too!
THE INNOVATOR: Ludwick Marishane has been rated as the best student entrepreneur in the world (Global Champion of the Global Student Entrepreneurs Awards 2011). He is the founder & Chief of Headboy Industries Inc, and is his country’s youngest patent-holder after having invented Dry Bath. Google named him as one of the 12 brightest young minds in the world in 2011, and he received a BBusSc-Finance & Accounting degree at the University of Cape Town. He was one of only two Africans on the Forbes 30 Under 30 people who are changing the world.
